The New York State Department of Transportation and the Republic Airport Commission agreed to the concept of Vision Planning as a way to work with the community (residential, business, and airport) on roles the airport fills for Long Island. This alternative planning tool is similar to local Town’s Vision Plans and is used by airports in other areas of the country. It was also agreed that master planning efforts would be set abandon due to the lack of success in developing a master plan over the last 30+ years.
Through the vision planning process the Department is interested in furthering communication with the community surrounding the airport by working jointly to develop a shared vision of the airport and create a guide for the airport’s future. The vision planning process and statement will define: (1) the role of the airport; (2) how the airport seeks to fulfill that role; and (3) how the airport will work with the community to obtain desired operational and economic results while working to minimize impacts. The intent of this process is to produce a document that outlines the airport’s future planning efforts.
In April 2008, DY Consulting, a Roslyn based consulting firm, was selected as an independent firm to prepare the Vision Plan and Statement. A kickoff meeting is expected in the fall 2008. The Vision Statement Process may take six (6) to twelve (12) months to complete. During this process, the New York State Department of Transportation will continue its efforts to implement public safety projects and honor its obligations and legal agreements.
The Consultant will interview, through meetings and workshops, parties who have shown an interest in the airport. This will include elected and appointed officials, Federal Aviation Administration staff, Republic Airport Staff, the Republic Airport Commission, civic organizations, business organizations, and aviation organizations. The consultant will then prepare reports summarizing the interviews and providing conclusions regarding efforts to develop a vision statement.
An Open House at Republic will be held to present the outcomes of the meeting and workshops. Various vision alternatives will be presented and all in attendance will have an opportunity to comment.
The Consultant will then take the comments and prepare comprehensive vision plans which will be further evaluated to enable the Department to identify the most desired vision that meets the goals. To learn more about Vision Planning and to participate please see www.republicairportvision.com.
